Check-in and Out at Work (CIAO) is a mandatory attendance registration system implemented by the National Social Security Office (NSSO) to strengthen the fight against social fraud. Reporting work or CIAO is mandatory for certain maintenance and/or cleaning activities.
Attendance registration is mandatory for specific maintenance and/or cleaning activities that exceed a threshold amount of €30,000 per year per project. Not all activities under the jurisdiction of the Joint Committee for Cleaning Services are affected. Only activities aimed at cleaning property on behalf of a third party are subject to this regulation. Cleaning companies operating with service vouchers are exempt from this requirement.
Starting September 1, 2024, electronic attendance registration will be mandatory under Article 30 bis of the law of June 27, 1969, concerning social security. Check-in and Check-out at Work are required for specific maintenance and/or cleaning activities that exceed a threshold amount of €30,000 per year per project, €5,000 per year with one subcontractor, and there is no threshold amount for projects involving two or more subcontractors.
